Research ethics

Written for supervisors, committees and ethics boards.

If you're deciding whether data collected on Ximopi belongs in a thesis or paper, this page is for you. It explains how we recruit, inform, reward and protect participants.

1. Voluntary participation and the right to stop

Before starting, every respondent sees the study description written by the researcher, the number of questions, the estimated time and the reward.

Respondents can leave at any point without penalty. Nothing is recorded until they press Submit, so an abandoned survey leaves no partial data behind.

2. Separating identity from answers

Account details — name, email, payout information — are stored separately from survey responses. Each response carries a random ID and only five profile attributes: country, university, field of study, year and gender.

Researchers never receive names, contact details or payout information, and cannot see which other surveys a respondent has answered. Our Terms prohibit researchers from collecting identifying or sensitive data unless it is necessary and clearly explained to respondents.

3. Does paying participants bias the results?

We pay a modest reward proportional to the estimated time — not large enough to pressure anyone into taking part, and never dependent on what someone answers.

Reviews of the evidence find that incentives raise response rates and generally show little effect on the substance of answers (Singer & Ye, 2013, The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science). What payment can attract is low-effort responding — which is exactly what our quality checks are designed to filter.

As with any convenience or panel sample, results describe the people who chose to take part. We recommend reporting this as a limitation and comparing your sample's profile with your target population.

4. Methodology paragraph you can use

Copy, then replace the parts in [square brackets]. Your supervisor may ask you to adapt the wording to your institution's style.

English

Data were collected through Ximopi (ximopi.com), an online research participation platform for students and researchers in Southeast Asia. The survey was shown only to registered users whose self-reported profile matched the study's inclusion criteria ([state your criteria, e.g. third- and fourth-year undergraduate students in Vietnam]). Participation was voluntary: respondents saw the study description, estimated duration and reward before starting, could stop at any time without penalty, and no answers were recorded unless the survey was submitted. Each respondent received a small reward in platform credit for a completed response that passed the platform's quality checks, regardless of the content of their answers. The platform automatically excluded responses that failed an instructed-response attention check, were completed in less than 35% of the estimated completion time, gave identical ratings to all scale statements (when the survey contained 5 or more), or contained meaningless open-ended text. Responses were delivered to the researcher without names or contact details. Of [N] submitted responses, [n] passed these checks and were retained for analysis.

5. Requests from ethics committees

Ethics committees and supervisors can request a description of our processes or verification of a study's data collection. Email info@ximopi.com with the subject “Ethics enquiry” and the survey title.
